Meet WCC Tugger: A Service Dog in Training Backed by Phillies charities
Team Foster, in partnership with Warrior Canine Connection, is excited to introduce WCC Tugger, a service dog in training whose journey is made possible thanks to the generous support of Phillies Charities, Inc. Through their sponsorship, Tugger is being prepared to serve a Veteran in need and he’s doing so with a legacy of strength and resilience behind him.
A Name That Honors a Legend
Tugger is proudly named in honor of Tug McGraw, the beloved Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher and father of country music star Tim McGraw. Known for his charisma, toughness, and unforgettable role in leading the Phillies to their first World Series title in 1980, Tug McGraw embodied the kind of grit and spirit that this service dog will one day bring to a veteran’s life. It’s a fitting tribute to a man who inspired so many, both on and off the field. The Tug McGraw Foundation serves nearly 1,000 veterans at Yountville and expands its reach nationwide through its network and initiatives
A Commitment to Those Who Served
Phillies Charities has long been dedicated to giving back to the community, and their support for veterans continues to shine. Their sponsorship of WCC Tugger reflects a deep commitment to helping service members living with the invisible and visible wounds of war. By funding his training, they are ensuring Tugger will one day provide life-changing support to a Veteran offering companionship, stability, and independence.
Where Tugger Comes From: Warrior Canine Connection
Tugger is being raised and trained through Warrior Canine Connection (WCC), a nonprofit organization that utilizes a mission-based trauma recovery model to support wounded veterans. At WCC, service dogs in training like Tugger are part of a powerful process—veterans help train the dogs as a form of therapy, and the dogs later go on to serve other veterans with disabilities. It's a cycle of healing and purpose that changes lives on both ends of the leash.
WCC Tugger is currently mastering foundational training and socialization as he works toward becoming a fully certified service dog. His journey will take time, care, and dedication—but with Phillies Charities’ support, he’s well on his way.
