Meet Dave Kahl: New Committee Chair Leading the 2026 Foster 100
This year marks a meaningful transition for the Foster 100. After four years of leadership from Randy Sylvester, we’re excited to introduce Dave Kahl as the new committee chair—a familiar face to many riders, volunteers, and supporters.
Here is a little bit about Dave
Dave’s path to this role didn’t start with cycling. It started with a service dog named SSD Queso.
A Penn State graduate and recently retired actuarial/IT professional, Dave built a long career grounded in discipline and problem‑solving. But his most important work began at home: raising three children with his wife, Eileen, and becoming deeply involved in the service dog community.
After their daughter received a Service Dog of her own (SSD Queso), and seeing the value a fully accredited Service Dog can provide to someone, Dave and Eileen felt compelled to give back. Since then, they’ve raised fourservice dogs through Susquehanna Service Dogs and are currently raising AVD Stanley for America’s Vet Dogs.
Seeing the life‑changing impact of service dogs firsthand is what ultimately brought Dave to Team Foster.
Dave’s first Foster 100 experience was as a volunteer at a rest stop—puppy in training included. The stories from veterans, the camaraderie among riders, and the energy of the day lit a fire in him.
He trained and completed his first Foster 100 the following year.
Since then, he has:
- Completed four Foster 100 rides
- Participated in three Ruff Rides
- Joined the McMaster Open
- Volunteered year after year with his growing pack of service dogs in training
The more he participated, the more he realized how deeply the mission resonated with him.
Foster 100 Chair Position
After retiring in 2024, Dave made a commitment to focus on health, family, and improving his community. When the opportunity arose to take on the Foster 100 committee chair role, he didn’t hesitate.
“I want to make a difference any way I can,” Dave says. “This event has grown into something incredible, and I want to help keep that momentum going.”
He is quick to credit the planning committee—“an incredibly talented and dedicated team”—and believes deeply in the power of collaboration.
What to Expect in 2026
Dave brings a thoughtful leadership philosophy to the role: Don’t mess with a well‑oiled machine.
The Foster 100 has thrived because of strong leadership, dedicated volunteers, and passionate riders. Dave’s focus is on honoring what works while continuing to refine the experience.
His goals for this year:
- Keep the mission front and center, honoring Erick Foster’s legacy
- Ensure every rider has a safe and rewarding day
- Bring forward improvements rooted in rider feedback
- Continue highlighting the impact of service dogs—puppies included
A New Chapter, Same Mission
As we thank Randy for his extraordinary leadership, we look forward to a new chapter with Dave—someone whose passion for veterans, service dogs, and this community is unmistakable.
If you spot him at a training ride (likely with a puppy in tow), be sure to say hello. Dave is ready to bring his heart, experience, and love of this mission into the year ahead.
