HELP RAISE A SERVICE DOG

It’s critically important that our dog partner organizations have enough volunteer puppy raisers to help meet the growing need for service dogs among Veterans. Puppy raisers play a vital role by giving their time, love, and commitment to raising and socializing future service dogs during their first year of life. These early months are crucial in preparing the dogs for their life-changing work with Veterans who are living with PTSD, mobility challenges, and other service-related conditions.

 

Right now, there's a significant shortage of puppy raisers, which has led to a waiting list for Veterans in need of a service dog. Every volunteer who steps up to raise a puppy directly helps reduce that wait and brings us one step closer to transforming a Veteran’s life.

This past weekend, Veterans, friends, and community supporters came together to honor the life of Walt Hartnett, a devoted Veteran, father, husband, and community leader. 33 teams competed in the cornhole fundraiser, ran by @ProjectRefit. It was an incredible day of fun, connection, and remembrance. Together, we raised over $10,000 to support the Hartnett family. Walt dedicated his life to serving others, both in uniform and as a passionate advocate for fellow Veterans. This event was more than just a tournament; it was a powerful tribute to his impact and a show of love for his family. Thank you to everyone who played, donated, and shared memories. “My PTSD reached a point where I'd be best described as "circling the drain". I had managed to make it to a 20yrs retirement and scored a six-figure Federal job. I couldn't even make it 10 yrs in that environment. People complaining about luxuries taken for granted in office life made it personal for me and I made it known. I was eventually told to resign, and I did. The reality is, I got fired. I knew I had to work on myself so, I bought a cabin in the mountains and spent a year in isolation. Eventually I married my best friend, and we were happy. But, my NCO stripes came out one night when a guy made an inappropriate comment towards my wife. There were 8 of them so I got my softball bat from my truck and asked them to submit their lineup. It was then I knew I needed more help than a loving marriage and daily medication can bring. So I got on the internet and Team Foster entered my life. “I lived a life that was full of depression, anxiety, anger, and regret. I abused alcohol, hated myself, and did not see any future outside of the uniform that I wore for more than a decade. After years of therapy and nothing seemingly getting better, I asked someone for help that I never believed in but unknowingly always believed in me, I laid on my couch and asked Jesus Christ for help. I had a personal encounter with Him that night and my life was never the same. I was called a couple weeks later and offered an opportunity to go to rehab where I spent 3 months doing intense inner work and had the dedicated time and space needed to process my traumas. Shortly after returning from rehab, I was introduced to Team Foster where I was given the opportunity to stay grounded in the veteran community. I attribute this new life that I live and my 2 ½ years of sobriety to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, my family who never gave up on me, and the veteran community.

Team Foster was pumped to be part of the Conshy Classic Bike Race, presented by Simon’s Heart, an organization dedicated to preventing sudden cardiac arrest in youth through awareness, screenings, and education. We had a great time connecting with local participants and sharing the Team Foster mission to pair injured and disabled Veterans with accredited service dogs. What made this event even more special was our shared passion for raising funds through cycling, proving that pedals and purpose can go hand in hand. Thank you to @simonsheartconshyclassic and all the race participants for welcoming us. The @toyotausa Salute to Service Phillies game honors military heroes with a special tribute, including a Veteran throwing out the first pitch. Team Foster had the honor of helping select David Billingsley, a US Army Veteran. Corporal Billingsley is a dedicated supporter of Team Foster, playing a key role in helping the PA Bourbon Squad raise over $120,000 to support the organization’s mission of pairing service dogs with veterans. In addition to his fundraising efforts, David served six years with C Troop, 5th Cavalry Squadron at Fort Knox, KY, where he was honored as both his Troop and Battalion Soldier of the Year. He remains active in the veteran community, including riding with the Warriors Watch Riders to welcome home returning service members. Dave is set to throw out the first pitch on Saturday, May 17, during the Toyota Salute to Service game at Citizens Bank Park. Joining Dave for the Phillies festivities are his niece, Deanna Martinez, who is currently serving in the U.S. Air Force, and his nephew, Charles Martinez, a proud U.S. Army Veteran. This is a multi-day event where 34 teams of disabled veterans hit the ice to battle for the title of National Champion. The Warriors League gives veterans more than just a game — it provides comradery, purpose, and support through hockey, along with valuable life resources offered by individual teams. Team Foster was proud to be part of this mission by raising funds to pair disabled veterans with accredited service dogs, continuing our commitment to making sure no hero is left behind. A special thank you to Ronald, Jill, and AVD Mocha for volunteering their time, answering player questions, and continuing their service as outstanding service dog advocates.
