Team Foster is a nonprofit organization committed to helping injured and disabled Veterans by funding the training and placement of accredited, life-saving service dogs at no cost to the Veterans. We provide lifelong support for every Veteran-dog team and advocate for the rights and fair treatment of Veterans and their service dogs in communities, workplaces, and through legislative efforts. Additionally, Team Foster educates the public nationwide about the challenges Veterans face and the transformative impact that properly trained service dogs can have on their lives.

HELP RAISE A SERVICE DOG

It’s critically important that our dog partner organizations have enough volunteer puppy raisers to help meet the growing need for service dogs among Veterans. Puppy raisers play a vital role by giving their time, love, and commitment to raising and socializing future service dogs during their first year of life. These early months are crucial in preparing the dogs for their life-changing work with Veterans who are living with PTSD, mobility challenges, and other service-related conditions.

 

Right now, there's a significant shortage of puppy raisers, which has led to a waiting list for Veterans in need of a service dog. Every volunteer who steps up to raise a puppy directly helps reduce that wait and brings us one step closer to transforming a Veteran’s life.

Support Veterans, citizens, and business owners

It’s essential for citizens, Veterans, and business owners to understand the rights of individuals who rely on service dogs. Service dogs are not pets—they are highly trained working animals that provide vital assistance to people with disabilities, including many of our nation’s Veterans.

Many people are unaware of the ADA laws protecting service dog teams. When it's not obvious what a service dog does, businesses may only ask:

  1. Is the dog a service animal required due to a disability?
  2. What task has the dog been trained to perform?

They cannot ask about the person’s disability, require documentation, or request that the dog demonstrate its task. Education and awareness are key to ensuring Veterans and others with service dogs can move through the world with dignity, confidence, and the support they need.

Lead by Veterans John Sheehan and Eric Miller, the Veterans in Pfizer-Collegeville team not only sponsored a team for Ruff Ride Philly, they invited TF to join them on campus for a visit, leveraged the volunteer giving hours for donations offered by Pfizer corporate, raised a bunch of money organically, *AND* took advantage of Pfizer’s annual 200% matching day to maximize their individual contributions. All told, Veterans in Pfizer-Collegeville raised more than $13,000 for Team Foster at Ruff Ride Philly this year. We are so proud of our amazing partners and moved by the extra effort from this crew. “I lived a life that was full of depression, anxiety, anger, and regret. I abused alcohol, hated myself, and did not see any future outside of the uniform that I wore for more than a decade. After years of therapy and nothing seemingly getting better, I asked someone for help that I never believed in but unknowingly always believed in me, I laid on my couch and asked Jesus Christ for help. I had a personal encounter with Him that night and my life was never the same. I was called a couple weeks later and offered an opportunity to go to rehab where I spent 3 months doing intense inner work and had the dedicated time and space needed to process my traumas. Shortly after returning from rehab, I was introduced to Team Foster where I was given the opportunity to stay grounded in the veteran community. I attribute this new life that I live and my 2 ½ years of sobriety to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, my family who never gave up on me, and the veteran community.

Meet Gunnery Sergeant Matthew Hannan (Ret.), a 15-year Marine Corps veteran, wounded in Fallujah and now continuing his mission to serve. We had a great time connecting with local participants and sharing the Team Foster mission to pair injured and disabled Veterans with accredited service dogs. What made this event even more special was our shared passion for raising funds through cycling, proving that pedals and purpose can go hand in hand. The @toyotausa Salute to Service Phillies game honors military heroes with a special tribute, including a Veteran throwing out the first pitch. Team Foster had the honor of helping select David Billingsley, a US Army Veteran. Corporal Billingsley is a dedicated supporter of Team Foster, playing a key role in helping the PA Bourbon Squad raise over $120,000 to support the organization’s mission of pairing service dogs with veterans. In addition to his fundraising efforts, David served six years with C Troop, 5th Cavalry Squadron at Fort Knox, KY, where he was honored as both his Troop and Battalion Soldier of the Year. He remains active in the veteran community, including riding with the Warriors Watch Riders to welcome home returning service members. Dave is set to throw out the first pitch on Saturday, May 17, during the Toyota Salute to Service game at Citizens Bank Park. Joining Dave for the Phillies festivities are his niece, Deanna Martinez, who is currently serving in the U.S. Air Force, and his nephew, Charles Martinez, a proud U.S. Army Veteran. We were honored to attend the Warriors National Championships at the Florida Panthers Ice Den. This is a multi-day event where 34 teams of disabled veterans hit the ice to battle for the title of National Champion. The Warriors League gives veterans more than just a game — it provides comradery, purpose, and support through hockey, along with valuable life resources offered by individual teams. Team Foster was proud to be part of this mission by raising funds to pair disabled veterans with accredited service dogs, continuing our commitment to making sure no hero is left behind. A special thank you to Ronald, Jill, and AVD Mocha for volunteering their time, answering player questions, and continuing their service as outstanding service dog advocates.
